60 years on the production of the first Ukrainian truck

In 1959, the KrAZ-222 Dnipro dump truck was the starting point for a new history of the Ukrainian heavy automobile industry.

The first Ukrainian truck - KrAZ-222 Dnepr - a heavy duty dump truck with a wheeled formula of 6 × 4, produced by the Kremenchug Automobile Plant from 1959 to 1966. The machine for operation on roads of the first and second categories, allowing axial load up to 10 tons, and also for work in quarries is assigned.

The prototype of this truck was the 3-axle Diamond 980, delivered in the USSR through the Lend-Lease system. On its basis, at the car factory in Yaroslavl, which later became a motor-vehicle enterprise, they developed the model of the YAZ-222. From 1958 to 1959 the truck was manufactured in Yaroslavl, but almost immediately, its production began at KrAZ.

The first cars in Krasnoyarsk were assembled on the castles manually, but in May 1959 a main conveyor with a length of 259.6 m was launched. A year later, the plant produced the first KrAZ trucks for export, and in 1963 the 25 thousandth car came down from the conveyor, which became the dump truck KrAZ-222B.

In 1966 a 11-ton KrAZ-256B was placed on the conveyor instead.
